This is one part in a series of filmmaking discussions on audio post-production for the open source SciFi movie Jathai’s Wager.

its Ami here in London,

I have downloaded the file “estab-prequel-oct13.mov” but it appears to have been rendered as a mpeg1 or mpeg2…  the problem is that these formats “multiplex” the video and audio,  in such a way that i am unable to extract the audio as a separate file.

We need the audio file so that we can work on it independently.  I have had no luck converting it to a “DV STREAM” video file,  as it loses all audio in the process.

Could you export the full audio file from that clip,  in exactly the same length as the video, and make available for download?  Alternatively if you can bounce is as an MPEG4 or DV stream, i should be able to extract audio.

If all goes well we should have something ready within a week!

Here is a link to a wav file of just the audio:

blishing.wav

Here is a link to the video file (with audio) in Xvid mp4 format:

uel-establishing-oct17-mp4.avi

(It’s “wrapped” as an avi file, but it’s an mp4,so you can change the extension if it doesn’t work for you.)

Let me know when you get these and if everything is cool.  From now on I’ll include a separate wav version of the audio when I do uploads.  I still like to use the blueray mpg format for the high res video files (excellent video quality), but I can also include an mp4 version for faster downloading and audio work.

Solomon

Hi Solomon,

the WAV file is working fine, we are currently editing some sounds in with jonas’s music. There are some unrepairable breaks in the dialog, i guess from the camera microphone being overloaded, not much we can do with that unfortunately.

Anyway, Danny and I will get something to you soon!

Ami.

Solomon,

here is what we have sofar.

The link is below for downloading

(active for 1 week): Update November 07. 2008 - this link has been removed, don’t worry we’ll be releasing the prequel this week!)

The stereo wave file is 16 BIT, 48Khz.

It should start exactly when the prequel clip does, from 13th october.  As mentioned before, the dialog breaks up, so without ADR there is nothing we can do for that, however we had lots of fun making our first generation REDEYE!

I imagine you would want it tweaked etc….

I think its a little loud in the mix also, but its a rough early version so dont worry about that yet.

We were thinking that a “cold barren wind” atmosphere could suit, but there is no sign of wind in the shots so we omitted that for now.

From the scripit we assume that the world is mostly uninhabitable, right? Therefore a desolate environment might fit??

A major point for production is that whoever is doing a shoot should do their VERY BEST to get decent location dialog.

This is because ADR will be very complex for this kind of project!

We can do it in London, but of course the actors will probably not be!

We have experience in cleaning location dialog, however it must be recorded well on location for us to get away with this…alternatively, if dubbing is essential, and you can get time in a dubbing studio in Cali, (or whoever is shooting - wherever in the world - can dub in their city) then send us the takes for mixing down, we could work that too…

It will be more difficult to get sync’d and correct however.

Ok give us some feedback soon!

We will get a better smoother mix for the music if time permits, before the prequel release date.

Good luck!
