Actor Owen Wilson Hospitalised After Allegedly Attempting Suicide.

August 29, 2007

owen_wilson.jpg

If you read the newspapers, glossy magazines or gossip columns I can only assume that most of you are already aware of the rumours flying round regarding Owen Wilson’s recent hospitalisation. For those of you who have been walking around with your eyes closed or a paper bag on your head for the last few days and actually have no idea what I’m going on about keep reading and all a few vague details shall be revealed.

My fave Entertainment gossip guru Perez Hilton recently reports that TV’s Extra have managed to get their hands on the actual calls made to the emergency services when Owen Wilson was found, supposedly confirming that it was definitely called in as a suicide attempt. Everyone is speculating that the reason for his sudden descent into depression has something to do with the recent split from fellow ‘You, Me & Dupree’ actress Kate Hudson. I love Kate and I hate the fact that she seems to be getting portrayed as the ice queen in all of this.

However, on the other hand I have also heard various conflicting rumours that Owen Wilson has been on a downward spiral for a while now, indulging in wild partying and various difference substance abuse and that THIS is actually the real reason for Kate leaving him. What to believe?! Personally I’m holding fire until I see an actual statement about the full incident from Owen himself. Hmmph.

Whatever you choose to believe about this story, I do genuinely think it’s such a shame that something like this has happened and wish Owen a speedy recovery. He is one of my favourite comedy actors.

On Monday Owen issued the following statement: “I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time,” Let’s hope that the press respect his wishes and give him a few days to ‘Heal’ or detox himself or whatever he has to do to get well again. He was in the middle of filming ‘Tropic Thunder’ directed by Ben Stiller so hopefully he can pull himself together enough to resume filming again soon.

I personally just can’t get over the fact that Owen Wilson is even involved in something like this, he really is the last person I would have expected to try this kind of thing! Don’t you think? Maybe it was a cry for help, or maybe he did actually intend to end things, either way I know that there are most definitely a whole heap of better ways to solve your problems than to take such drastic and disturbing action.

Get well soon Owen! Smile

Fracture Movie Review Analysis and Commentary

August 25, 2007

fracture.jpg

*Spoilers Included Below*

Anthony Hopkins is Ted Crawford a successful millionaire who learns early on in the film that his young beautiful wife is cheating on him. Rather than talk things through rationally with her, Ted loses the plot and plans her murder, shooting his wife in the head and then in a stroke of genius having the police officer she is sleeping with come to the scene of the crime as the hostage negotiator.

When the officer sees the woman who has been shot and realises that it is his lover Ted coldly and calmly confesses to killing her. A scuffle ensues and we skip forward to see Ted in the courtroom. Hotshot lawyer Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling) reluctantly winds up being the prosecutor and finds himself pushed almost to breaking point as his reputation for winning every case he takes on and his moral conscience are tested to the extremes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Ryan Gosling was fantastic, the charm and charisma he brought to the character was one of the key points in keeping this thriller watchable and genuinely enjoyable from start to finish. The chemistry between the always astounding Anthony Hopkins and Gosling himself is second to none; I lost count of the amount of times their sarcastic banter had me chuckling to myself. Several of Anthony Hopkins lines were also fabulously dry and twisted and his performance did remind me a little of when he played Hannibal, that cunning almost arrogant self belief in his crime works really well and makes you love the character and almost not want Willy to outsmart him

The movie twists and turns enough times to keep you guessing sufficiently well and although I did hear that a couple of the finer legal details may not have been completely accurate, I think occasionally in movies sometimes you have to skim over some aspects to create the best possible outcome for the story. By the way, if there are any legal experts out there who know exactly which of the scenes didn’t quite work in the real life legal system and why feel free to comment!

Overall I’d say fracture was a film well worth watching that isn’t afraid to take risks and keep the viewer guessing until the end. It was incredibly well acted and directed and I for one would happily watch it again.

Big Brother 8 UK – The Final Week Approaches Who Will You Vote Out?

August 25, 2007

bb-eye-hdr1.jpg

Well, this years Big Brother UK has been a bit of an odd one hasn’t it. So far we’ve seen the show kick off with a house full of women, and no sign of a male housemate until poor old Ziggy was thrown in at the deep end! I personally thought that was the shows weakest ever twist and vowed not to watch again until more males were added. That’s not just because I wanted some male eye candy in there (honestly!) but more to do with the fact that the girls were just so damn annoying on their own! Read more

Blades of Glory Movie Review Analysis and Commentary

August 16, 2007

blades.jpg
I sat down last night to watch this movie on DVD still not being quite aware of why I hadn’t managed to get to the cinema to see it as I’m a huge fan of Jon Heder and happen to be of the opinion that Napoleon Dynamite is one of the funniest movies ever made, Gosh!

Now, when you put Heder and Ferrell together in a comedy you are going to expect big things, these are two of the funniest men in entertainment and when teamed with Ben Stiller as one of the producers you cant help but hold your breath in anticipation of what’s to come. Let me tell you, this movie doesn’t disappoint; you really are in for the silliest, most hilarious 93 minutes of your life week.

Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) are rival figure Skaters who after an argument on the ice find themselves banned from competing in the sport forever. That is until they find a loop hole in the system that states that they may compete, but only if they do so together as a team. Spurred on by their coach (Craig T. Nelson) they begin training to become the best male figure skating champions the world has ever seen.

This plotline is completely stupid, but that’s also what makes it so good. The whole film has an air of ‘Zoolander’ about it, probably down to Ben Stiller’s influence as producer; did anyone else find themselves noticing subtle similarities all the way through?… Zoolander is another of my favourite comedy movies so as you can tell I go for the nonsensical slapstick kind of humour and that’s probably why I loved Blades of Glory so much.

Jon Heder was absolutely amazing and has been consistently entertaining in most films I’ve seen him in to date, his facial expressions when he pulled his moves on the ice were hilarious and it was good to see some of those dancing skills put to good use again. Will Ferrell was equally good as Chazz, the recovering sex addict and had some of the funniest scenes. One of which involves quite possibly the best, and slowest chase scene in a movie EVER. Cue Will Ferrell and Will Arnett (who plays his rival Stranz Van Waldenberg) on ice skates literally struggling to walk on them as they cross busy roads and slippery building floors. Pure genius!

It was actually great to see Will Arnett in this movie I loved him on Arrested Development as “Gob” one of the shows best characters. He has a lot of upcoming movies on the go according to IMDB so keep an eye on him. Jenna Fischer, who you guys from the US will recognise as ‘Pam’ from the office also puts in a strong performance as Jimmy’s love interest in the movie and its great to see her branching out into new projects.

This is without doubt one of the funniest movies I’ve watched in a long time, it requires absolutely no brainpower and is completely and utterly silly from start to finish which gives it such a great appeal. Anyone else seen this one yet?

The Hills Have Eyes 2 Movie Review Analysis and Commentary

August 15, 2007

61ufkneujl_ss500_.jpg
As I’ve already mentioned a few times here on Solomon Rothman Films, I’m a big fan of Wes Craven and am usually the first one to defend him when people say “He’s not as good as he used to be” and “This film was a letdown” etc but good old Wes has finally well and truly dropped the ball as far as I’m concerned after just having watched The Hills Have Eyes 2 (The Remake) I can honestly say, what a complete waste of my time and energy, Wes; get your act together please!

The Hills Have Eyes 2 was originally made in 1985 and wasn’t exactly the greatest film ever back then. So, you would expect that with this remake and Wes Craven’s son Jonathan on board that they would have at least ironed out the creases and made this film better. Guess again! In fact all they seem to have done is made this film more brutal. There was a completely disgusting birth scene at the start and a unnecessary rape scene towards the middle of the movie which is obviously a blatant attempt to get the same level of shock factor with this movie as the first but they seem to be forgetting that the shock factor is no good without some form of vaguely interesting storyline to back it up.

I can honestly say I didn’t give a crap about any of the main characters; none of them had any remotely endearing qualities about them and the plotline was about as interesting as watching paint dry. At least with the first Hills Have Eyes remake the story had some excitement, tense scenes and a couple of good main characters whilst still being shocking and grotesque in places (The breast milk scene in the caravan, eurgh!)

Instead, The Hills Have Eyes 2 just seemed to be plodding along at its own slow pace and occasionally throwing in a few death scenes and a bit of blood and gore in a lame attempt to keep horror fans satisfied. Sorry, but it doesn’t work like that!

In my opinion Wes should have never replaced Alexander Aja with Martin Weisz as director, maybe the film would have had a completely different look and feel had he still been on board, but who knows. Perhaps this was just one Wes Craven movie that should never have even been re made. Either way, I hope that Wes begins to get back to his old self sometime soon and makes some more of those cool and edgy films that I adore and admire him for.

Your thoughts on this movie and Wes Craven’s past films would be great!

10 Reasons To Love the Beckham’s – A Positive Look at Posh and Becks.

August 9, 2007

poshnbeckstitleimg.jpg
Victoria and David Beckham are always in the forefront of the media eye. You cannot escape reading about them no matter how hard you try, but rather than being in the spotlight for their positive impact on the entertainment world lately they seem to be frequently bad mouthed and criticised both as people and as entertainers.

I like the Beckham’s, I’m not a huge fan but I genuinely don’t understand what is so bad about them and am so sick of reading articles constantly revolving around how skinny Posh is (Admittedly she could do with getting a few of those curves back that she used to have, stick think is NOT a good look lets get that straight) or about how David has got no personality. So instead of writing a standard article this week I decided to take a look at some of the Beckham’s good qualities both as people and as entertainers and see how this faired against everyone’s opinion of them… Read more

Britney Spears Crazy Downward Spiral Continues

August 7, 2007

sp.jpg

To be perfectly honest I’ve never been a huge Britney Spears fan. I have bought a couple of her CD’s in the past as they are annoyingly catchy but that’s about as far as it goes. However, I am now starting to feel really sorry for her and think it’s definitely about time she got professional help, not just for her own Sake but for the sake of her kids now more than ever.

As a mum myself I find Britney’s behaviour seriously scary and can’t help but wonder who on earth looks after those kids when she’s out partying and doing god knows what else in her crazy recent lifestyle. It really is bordering on ridiculous and I don’t see it ending any time soon. It all seemed to start when she shaved her head a few months ago after her hairdresser refused to do it for her. When I first saw these pictures I thought it was a joke. My first response was “Photoshop” but then as more and more websites started to report the same news I finally believed it! Does anyone know what this was actually all about? Has she ever stated an actual valid reason for doing this??

britneyshaved.jpg

More past dodgy behaviour recently includes attacking a reporter with an umbrella, and then claiming she did it as ‘research’ for a movie role. (Yeah right) and  a string of awful pictures of her with no underwear on along with the UK magazine OK stating that she completely flaked out in an interview with them recently. They haven’t published the pictures that they were allegedly going to show mind you so one can only assume that Brit’s people got to them first. It was also reported today that she hit some car outside a pharmacy and dented it in another strange incident.

I just can’t understand why her mum or the rest of her family are letting her do this to herself? Surely there has to be a point when someone steps in and says “Enough is enough, you are going to get help!” If it were happening to a loved one of mine I’d do everything in my power to make them see sense and to stop them causing themselves any more embarrassment. Then again, I guess we never really do know what goes on behind closed doors maybe they have tried to help and Britney doesn’t want to know.

I heard somewhere recently that Kevin Federline is trying to get custody of their kids, I’m not sure how true this is and as much as he gets on my nerves I do think that right now those children would be better off with him. I’m just waiting to see what crazy stuff Britney comes out with next, it’s getting horrible to watch now though, where as once we kind of laughed at it all and thought wow how crazy is she?! Now we look at it and cringe in embarrassment for her. I only hope she seeks help soon before she gets any worse.

Vacancy Movie Review Commentary and Analysis

August 4, 2007

vacancy.jpg

Vacancy staring Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson is a film that has received mixed reactions from both the press and public since its release and after watching it this evening I can completely understand why.

It’s that old classic formula, Amy and David Fox, a married (but soon to be divorced) couple on their way home from a long night of travelling decide to take a detour and lo and behold find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere. As luck would have it of course, there is an old run down motel just down the road and the couple decide to spend the night. As you would expect from this type of film we soon learn that the motel owner has gone a bit ‘Norman Bates’ and whilst watching TV in their room they begin to realise that the scenes of torture and murder playing out on the screen in front of them have actually taken place inside the four walls of that very motel. They soon realise that escape is not going to be easy and a series of hidden doors and underground passages give the motel owner and his sicko friends the upper hand providing no end of hiding places in the ultimate game of cat and mouse.

As I already mentioned, the movie has received mixed reviews, with people being split 50/50 between loving the movie and hating it. I think that this is largely to do with the fact that although the film has plenty of drama and some VERY tense moments its plotline has been over used. It bears more than a vague resemblance to Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 classic ‘Psycho’ and has countless scenes that make you think “haven’t I seen that in another movie?’ but the tense and dramatic scenes that begin to unfold almost manage to outweigh this.

Along with my own personal fear of ‘old people’ as mentioned in previous blogs, another of my all time fears is someone breaking into the house. (I’m not paranoid, honest!) In fact I think that this was actually voted the number one fear in a public poll somewhere recently so it would explain why this movie really unnerves people. The fact that the two main characters have no control of the situation and their realisation that they are being watched from every angle really gets you thinking and you can’t help but be swept along in the moment.

Both Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale have some rather cheesy lines to endure through this movie at times but generally they both acted well and built up the suspense convincingly. Frank Whaley who played the creepy owner of the hotel gave a good performance but again the role just felt like it had been done before.

My overall view on Vacancy is that it’s definitely watchable, enjoyable and actually very tense and engaging at times but if you’re looking for an ORIGINAL concept for a horror I would advise you to pass this one by and keep searching!
